A man accidentally stabs himself in the groin but lives to thank the emergency service team
A Man who accidentally stabbed himself in the groin has thanked the Air Ambulance medical team who flew to his rescue*, treating the stabbing injury on scene and evacuating him as fast as possible. The father of two was holidaying in a campsite when he slipped while preparing a chicken curry dinner.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS), North West Ambulance service and a doctor from the BASICS service were called out on July 28, to the man in his 30s who was in critical condition after losing 4-5 pints of blood. On arrival, the aircrew doctor and paramedic team used Celox haemostatic dressings along with military pressure dressings to stem the bleed.
The man, was then given blood at the scene and in the helicopter while being flown to James Cook University Hospital for emergency surgery. The flight took just 18 minutes; by road the same journey would have taken around an hour and 15 minutes. He arrived in a critical condition.
A few days later the patient said: “After I severed my femoral artery, the air ambulance, including Theo [the BASICS doctor], played a major part in saving my life. I never thought that in one day, I could have been dependent on so many people. They all have my eternal gratitude, respect and love.
“I’m doing well, up and about now and able to walk, I mean hobble, unassisted. I should be out by midweek. I’m eternally grateful to all involved in saving me. I now have many heroes.” **
