Celox™ Technology

Origins of CELOX

CELOX is proven to stop life-threatening bleeding fast – and is trusted by militaries, emergency services and healthcare professionals worldwide for over 18 years.

When a wound is haemorrhaging, blood escapes from the circulatory system at the wound site, the body then attempts to stop the haemorrhage via the intrinsic and extrinsic clotting pathways, which results in the formation of a stable clot.

Patients who have suffered major blood loss are at significant risk of becoming coagulopathic, a medical condition that causes the body’s natural clotting mechanism to become ineffective.

Studies support that CELOX works independently of the body’s natural clotting cascade4 and has been shown to work even in the presence of clotting dysfunction4.

Some other haemostats on the market work by accelerating the body’s clotting cascade which may become compromised during major blood loss.  CELOX works independently of this process.

CELOX is designed to help stop life-threatening bleeding quickly and reliably.

Post-Partum Haemorrhage

Safe and clinically effective supported by a range of peer reviewed published clinical papers1, 2, 3

After years of effectively employing CELOX™ gauze in rigorous settings like trauma, military and emergency care, a promising opportunity emerged in the realm of PPH. There are significant global challenges associated with PPH which unpinned our drive and passion to support research and development across reproductive health, to produce a versatile, easy to use, cost effective, clinically successful device.

The journey towards the creation of CELOX™ PPH commenced with an exhaustive research and development phase where it underwent scrupulous testing and assessment over a period of 10+ years, ensuring its utmost safety and effectiveness in intrauterine applications.

This evolution from military use to the delivery room serves as a testament to CELOX™ technology’s versatility and adaptability and its unwavering commitment to saving lives, regardless of the setting. It stands as a prime example of how advancements developed in one arena can be harnessed to make a transformative difference in another, ultimately benefiting individuals and communities around the world.

Mode of Action

When applied directly to the site of bleeding Celox Granules:

  1. The granules absorb fluid from the blood to form a robust gel-like plug.
  2. Concentrating the red blood cells and plasma to create a robust mechanical gel-like clot that plugs the bleeding source.
  3. The granules exhibit a level of mucoadhesion to the surrounding tissue, which keeps the gel plug in place
  4. Creating an environment which allows clot formation under the gel plug.

Despite significant advancements in scientific understanding and technology, trauma remains a leading cause of human morbidity and mortality5, with haemorrhage as a major cause of preventable death in combat and civilian trauma situations6,7,8. The CELOXTM range helps to speed up urgent medical care required on the battlefield and civilian emergency situations.

CELOXTM products utilise the same advanced chitosan-based technology, developed through years of collaboration between our highly skilled team and military and civilian trauma experts, to effectively prevent major haemorrhages in the field.

CELOXTM products are designed for the tough demands of tactical medicine and are also the perfect size for an Individual First Aid Kit. CELOXTM Products are used across several NATO forces and other military forces as seen during combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan9. CELOXTM Rapid is the UK Ministry of Defence’s product of choice10 and CELOXTM Gauze has been approved and listed in the TCCC Guidelines by the US CoTCCC committee11.
